On Watch

Kathi got this up at recycling. It doesn’t have an alarm, timer, date or any of the other stuff new watches boast of. You pull the little crown and you can set the time. Push it in and that’s it!

It reminds me of the one I wore in high school. Although, to be cool, I wore it underneath.

Then I got a job in a sawmill. “Oh you can’t wear that here, too much danger of it getting caught” Then a Foundry “Sorry, no watches or jewelry here, too much danger” And another Foundry, same story.

Belnor(1961) Another story I’ll tell you another time.

I signed on a freighter to Japan. “Oh no, no watches here”

Then I worked up at the Pace River Dam. “No jewelry” Actually, no long hair either as one guy got his caught in the long conveyor belt. Killed him!

OK, Then I got a job in a photo shop, Focus Prints. At last I could wear my watch! Nope, apparently the darkroom chemicals would ruin the watch and brand my arm with a distinctive tattoo.

Then Hornby and Highways Department, house building, darkroom etc. You guessed it!

I’m retired. Feels strange this thing on my wrist.

TCA 810

Probably 1956 or around then. My brother and I would ride out to the airport from Marpole and take pictures.

An update on my post about the airplane crash in 1956. Tw close friends remember the incident. One said he grew up in the area and was reminded by my blog that on the night of the crash he saw a flash in the mountains. The other friend said he remembered the reports and the giant search after the crash.

After I told the author Rien van Tilborg these stories he sent me this:

The flash was seen by a number of people.  One fellow, who lived in Chilliwack, had just come home and as he was hurrying in the pouring rain from his car to the house, he saw the flash.  Light and sound can be distorted in the prevailing weather that night, where the apparent source is actually miles away.

I apologize for my intense interest in this story. I’ll get over it. I promise!
