July 2nd/2013-Gord and I took a trip to the Sunshine coast. At the North end of Texada we paused to admire the calm water. Never seen it so flat. That night I got a comment on my Blog Qualicum Wind.

“Thanks for showing me what I experienced today on Hornby Island on the way back to Ford Cove.  We set out in calm weather and turned back when the winds started to pick up.  Travelling north to Ford Cove the winds were coming from the Vancouver Island side and slamming into us.  At the Ford Cove breakwater a  couple of nasties swamped me.   I am an experienced kayaker and learned  today that the winds I experienced was a Qualium.  Amazing as the marine weather forecast was for later afternoon winds coming from the NW.  Thank you for giving a name to this experience and for showing me what we went through.  David”

and my reply

“Hi David;

My buddie and I we’re just coming back from Texada when we ran into this familiar wind. We docked at The Cove when somebody yelled “there are Kayakers in the storm”. We watched you guys coming into shelter and were about to drive away when we learned that one kayaker was in the water. Ran back and saw that a boater had picked you up.
So happy you came through it safely. That is one of the wickedest winds anyone can run into. Even with a Sea Dory which we were travelling in.
